gains made during those hard sessions.

Powerfully simple, I'd say. The diet is traditionally very
high in carbohydrates and relatively low in fat and
processed foods. The absolute cornerstone is
ugali. Right, the maize flour staple.
Exactly, it's basically just maize flour cooked with water to
this dense almost play DoH like texture.
It's pure, complex carbohydrate, a fantastic source for
replenishing glycogen stores after hard training and
providing sustained energy release.
And crucially, it's simple, easily digestible, not loaded
with processed ingredients. What else besides you?
Golly. They supplement that with plenty
of local greens, often something akin to spinach or kale.
These are typically very rich in iron, which is vital for
producing hemoglobin in red blood cells, hence oxygen

And they often drink a lot of Milky Chai strong tea brewed
with milk and quite a lot of sugar.
Sugar. Interesting.
Yeah, which might sound counterintuitive to some modern

recovery right after training, plus fluids and some calcium
from the milk. The major advantage, though, is
perhaps what's missing. There's a noticeable lack of
junk food, very little snacking between meals.
The focus is almost entirely on whole, simple scheduled meals.
So it's like they're naturally carb loading almost with very
clean basic foods. They're utilizing this
incredibly high volume of pure, clean carbohydrates to fuel
massive endurance simply because that's what their traditional
diet provides. It sort of eliminates the need
for complex and often very expensive Western sports
supplements and engineered foods.
To a large extent, yes, the diet perfectly supports the demands
of the training. OK, so we have the environment,
the culture, the discipline, training and recovery, the
simple fuel. The final piece seems to be the
mental game. This whole physical and cultural
framework appears to be wrapped in the layer of distinct mental
toughness. Absolutely.
You talk to coaches, agents, the athletes themselves.
They're consistently described using words like focused,
disciplined, determined. Mental strength is considered a

fosters that level of mental strength?
Is it just the hardship they overcome?
Is it the financial pressure? Or is there something in the
coaching philosophy that deliberately builds it?
I think it's probably a combination of all those things,
but fundamentally there seems to be this ingrained concept of
running free. Running free?
What does that mean? It means they generally do not
set limits on themselves, they seem less constrained by
perceived limitations and critically, they are not scared
to push themselves to the maximum to explore the very edge
of their physical capabilities in training and racing.
How is that encouraged? Sometimes it's implicitly
encouraged by coaches who perhaps trust the athletes own
rate of perceived exertion, their internal sense of effort,
maybe more than relying solely on constant GPS pace data or
heart rate zones from a watch. Those external metrics can
sometimes inadvertently introduce self limiting
psychological barriers. You know, Oh, my heart rate is
too high, I need to back off even if they feel okay.
Interesting. So it's about trusting the
body's signals. To some extent yes.
And their whole belief system emphasizes resilience.
This is key. If a race doesn't go well, if a
workout is poor, they generally don't dwell on it.
They don't seem to get bogged down and over analyzing failures
for weeks on end. They just move on.
They seem to accept, perhaps more readily, that you have to
take the rough with the smooth. In the sport, bad days happen.
They process it quickly, learn what they can, and then
immediately pivot their focus to the next day's training,
maintaining a positive, forward-looking mindset.
That ability to bounce back mentally is huge.
